1. What are your favorite books?
It’s been quite some time since I last read any of his work, but I learned a great deal about leadership and the importance of charting one’s own course from Ken Kesey’s books, particularly “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Sometimes a Great Notion.” I also enjoy reading Hemingway, but most recently I have been intrigued by some of the concepts espoused by Malcolm Gladwell in books like “Outliers,” and “The Tipping Point,” among many others.
2. What’s your favorite type of food?
Although I am always more than willing to try something new and perhaps even a bit frightening, I’ve always been most fond of Spanish cuisine and relish any opportunity to experience a traditional Spanish dish while traveling through Europe.
3. Describe your typical day.
For many years I tried to force myself to be an early riser with the goal of accomplishing so much before the sun even came up, but that approach never suited me and I am so grateful that I gave up on the idea of doing something that just didn’t feel natural. Most mornings begin with a round of golf, and I play every weekday round with at least one of my clients or partners to ensure I am productive right from the start of my day. Since it doesn’t feel like work at all, I arrive at the office completely energized and typically hold meetings and develop strategies for clients throughout the remainder of the afternoon until well into the evening.
4. What’s your biggest accomplishment to date?
Although it is likely that most are more familiar with my previous entrepreneurial accomplishments, I believe that my consulting firm is by far my biggest career accomplishment. It is with a great deal of pride that I am able to help so happy wheels demo many talented entrepreneurs make their unique and innovative concepts a reality. Ultimately, I think the achievements of McLaren & Associates will greatly exceed anything else I have accomplished over the course of a long entrepreneurial career.
5. What was your first job?
I worked as a caddy throughout my high school and college years, which is part of the reason why I feel so comfortable conducting business out on the golf course. As a caddy, I was able to be a sort of fly on the wall during so many on-course meetings, and I saw firsthand how productive and professional the club members and their guests were while playing what so many view as nothing more than a game or recreational pursuit.
